It would seem that every man and his dog is talking about Search Engine Optimisation  these days. As Grey Coffee continues to develop and grow we are having more and more interactions with our customers regarding SEO and the impact it can have on your website. Some customers have even stopped me in the street and asked why their search listing may have dropped more recently, (talk about being put on the spot!)

As I am sure everyone is aware, Search Engine Optimisation is certainly nothing new, however keeping up to date with Google’s updates can be some what time consuming and in some cases reading about the latest search algorithm is not everyone’s cup of tea.

So what is Search Engine Optimisation and what are the key elements to SEO?

In the past Search Engine Optimisation was seen as predominantly a development orientated job, however this is certainly not the case anymore. The criteria that needs to be met to become ‘Search Engine Friendly’ spans much further than just the coding and development of your website.

SEO is not exactly one thing, but more a break down of a few elements that all contribute to your websites organic position within a search engine. These elements can be broken down into the following categories;

  1. Website Architecture – The development and coding of the website
  2.  Content – How relevant the content is in relation to the product or services your offering
  3. Linking Strategy – the quality of external links pointing to your website
  4. Website User Experience – how well you communicate and navigate users around your website

Why are search engines so important?

People use search engines like Google to find the answers to their questions so the search engine does the best possible job in directing these people to the websites and content that is most relevant to their query. The relevancy of the content and / or website is based on the following pointers;

  • The search engines will look at the content on the website or the content of the article, it will check the theme that is being given in the written content, the actual text on the page and any titles or descriptions given to the content
  • The search engine will look at the performance of your site, checking how long it takes for the site to load and if the site functions and works without errors across multiple browsers and devices
  • The authority of the website or article will be checked, if the article or website is linked to by other authoritative sites or the information is used as reference by other websites this will help with the ‘authority’ checking of the article

What options do I have to get to the top of Google overnight?

Unfortunately there are no quick fixes or shortcuts when it comes to ethical SEO. Anyone that convinces you otherwise is either a very good salesman or woman, or they are using underhand SEO tactics also known as black hat SEO.

Black Hat SEO provides very quick results to your SEO queries and strategy, however in the long run you will find that Google soon cotton on to these techniques and will start penalising your website.
